Cultivate Your Creativity

I really love these creativity exercises!  They are simple and easy to complete!

The most creative and innovative people and organizations will WIN, especially going forward. It's that simple.  Trouble is, we're running from meeting to meeting and not doing  things with our minds that foster ideas and great innovation.

Time to incorporate activities like these into your day!  You'll be grateful in the long run!

Here's to creativity and innovation!  Here’s to a positive future.

RT @fastfuture - Rohit Talwar - A Flood of Employment Opportunities on The Horizon

If you been around me much you know I am very interested in the challenges and opportunities facing the generations in the marketplace today.

Pay very close attention to the "points of interest" in the article and consider the professional opportunities that will be revealed in the very near future!  The #millennials face a very high unemployment rate, so a flood of employment opportunities is exactly what they need!

Creativity and Successful Leaders

Here is my favorite blog  of the week.  It represents an example of unconscious focus that is producing unintentional results! Worse yet, the creativity muscle is not being developed as the marketplace so desperately needs.

RT@Ken Cooper (@kencooperusa)

Creativity is one of the most important attributes needed for successful leaders now and into the future, but guess what, creative leaders are being overlooked.  Learn why in this fascinating blog by  -

Heidi Grant Halvorson

 Forbes http://t.co/jayNM3S

This blog demonstrates how critical it is to call out the attributes needed in successful leaders and organizations going forward.  I’ll talk about each of the critical attributes individually later, but let's start with my list.

The attributes of successful individuals, leaders and organizations now and into the future.

Positive Outcome Focused

Agile

Flexible

Creative

Innovative

Persistent

Connected

Self Driven

Learning Oriented

Collaborative

Relationship Oriented

If leaders and organizations do not call these attributes out and intentionally build and further develop them with their organizations, there will be  trouble on the horizon.  Those that do, will be well equipped to drive the course and steer toward opportunity and away from threats. Leave it to chance and prepare to pay a very high price!

Leverage the power of generations; it’s a matter of choice

Shiftingyears_1200x436

Four generations are together in the workplace for the first time in history.  It is how we choose to work together that will determine our success. All age groups must work diligently at being receptive and involved in the process.

1925 - 1945

Silent Generation

1946 - 1964

Baby Boom

1965 - 1979

Generation X

1980 – 2000

Net Gen, Generation Y, or Millennials

Demographic Truths

In 2008 I read a white paper by international consulting firm Deloitte entitled, “It’s 2008. Where Are Your Employees?” It discussed the impending talent crisis. I was fascinated with the undeniable demographic truths on the horizon:

·       Baby Boomers exiting the workplace in high numbers

·       The tremendously large size of the Millennial Generation

·       The diminutive size of Generation X  and its inability to backfill the spaces left by the departing generation

Simultaneously, I was being bombarded with requests for coaching and consulting regarding the challenges the established generation was experiencing in leading the Millennial Generation.

Economic Recession

Suddenly, and for the next several years, the economic recession cast aside the focus on these truths as organizations struggled to survive. But of course, these demographic trends did not pause and wait for the recession to pass! In the midst of one of the worst economic downturns, many Baby Boomers opted to stay put rather than retire. This only served to put a band-aid on the talent crisis predictions, and for the time being, nothing happened.

The reality is, the talent crisis will once again amp up, the Baby Boomers will regain their confidence and proceed to retire (in droves), and Generation X will not be able to backfill the openings left by the Boomers. This situation will be further complicated by the fact that there has been minimal sharing of knowledge and the Baby Boomers are leaving with critical insight that Generation X needs to carry on.

Leverage the Power of Generations

I believe the best solutions come when all the generations are at the table, collaborating, and coming up with solutions and innovations that leverage the power of the generations.

Unfortunately, this is rare. What is happening in the marketplace is collective eye-rolling—established generations roll their eyes at younger generations, and vice versa. There is fatigue and frustration on both sides of the equation.

I often tell people that a challenge and an opportunity usually dwell within close proximity of each another. That is definitely the case in this situation.  The result?  Solutions are created without collaboration.  Here is an example

Not long ago I received a call from a client asking me to review their new website.  I asked, “Who is your target audience?”  They said males and females ages 18 to 40.

The moment I landed on the website it was obvious it had been built by a group of over-age-40 males. Front and center was a talking head with a crisp shirt and conservative suit yammering gobbledygook. He was preaching corporate-speak on steroids! Fascinating, isn’t it? This is akin to a roundtable discussion on how to target the female purchasing audience without one woman at the table!

The younger generations are more interested in human beings with hearts, personalities, and a bit of humility.  They are not interested in someone who is preaching from a lofty position with eyes cast downward.

If the company had invited the up-and-coming generations to the table, they would have quickly realized what younger professionals like and don’t like.  They would have created a website that would appeal to the target audience with the influence that sage wisdom and decades of experience bring.

This is one of countless examples where collaboration—leveraging the power of generations—would have yielded a superior outcome and a more innovative solution.

I always say that order matters.  We all have something to learn, and we all have something to teach—in that order. If we come from a place of curiosity, where each party says to the other “I want to learn about and understand you,” we would quickly realize that we have more commonalities than differences .  Once common ground is established, we can see our differences as strengths and begin to realize the infinite opportunities that exist with four generations in the workplace.

Multiple generations working together can be leveraged as a source of great potential rather than a cause for tension. I believe that we are in a unique place where sage wisdom blended with new, fresh ideas can create the solutions the marketplace and workplace desperately need.

It is how we choose to work together that determines our success. By finding common ground, respecting differences, and letting go of assumptions, great things can happen!

Laura Goodrich´s”Seeing Red Cars Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future ” by Wayne Hurlbert

“You could be getting more of what you want – more new ideas, more teamwork in your department, and a more positive attitude in the company”, writes internationally recognized expert in the field of workplace dynamics and relationships, Laura Goodrich, in her inspirational and very practical book Seeing Red Cars: Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future. The author describes how we get more of what we focus on, and shares the tools for enhancing and sharpening the focus on what we really want.

Laura Goodrich points to the very familiar phenomenon of the purchaser of a red car suddenly seeing red cars everywhere. The author recognizes this sudden appearance of red cars as simply a fresh focus on red cars on the road. In fact, the red cars were there all along, but without the focus on them, they went unnoticed prior to the red car purchase. With this change in concentration, writes Laura Goodrich, a dramatic and very noticeable change in outcomes is possible. Unfortunately, as the author describes, people will often concentrate their focus on what they don’t want. The result is that those people also receive the bad things on which they sharpened their gaze. Laura Goodrich shares how the world doesn’t have to be that way, and guides the reader to focus on the desirable outcome, and how this reversal of direction makes all the difference in the world.

Laura Goodrich (photo left) understands that not only can individuals change their outlook, but that entire corporate cultures can be transformed as well. Instead of concentrating on weaknesses, the author demonstrates how entire organization can enhance strengths, increase passion, and develop a more engaged and productive workplace. Combining the change in thinking with the tools necessary to make the transition from a negative focused culture, to that of one where the positive outcome is sought, the author provides a system that provides real bottom line results. While many companies expend their energy on what they believe is preventing problems, the more effective organization creates an atmosphere where overall success is the goal. With this profound difference in organizational culture and behavior, any company can get what it really wants.

For me, the power of the book is how Laura Goodrich utilizes the red car phenomenon effectively to describe how people see and receive what they focus on in life. The author combines effectively the theory of why concentration on anything either good or bad, produces that result, with practical steps on how to change that concentration problem. Laura Goodrich bolsters her theoretical framework with the latest research in how the brain processes information, and how it focuses upon either good or undesirable results. The author shares the tools, including an online toolkit, to effectively rewire the brains of individuals or of entire organizations to effect positive and lasting change.

Along with the theory and practical exercises, Laura Goodrich also shares real world stories of companies who have made the leap to a focus on positive goals. The results of these corporate cultural changes are both dramatic and motivational for anyone seeking to improve morale within the company culture. Engaged and positive employees are also more productive and increase the organization’s revenue and profitability. Happy workers, concentrating on seeing the shiniest red cars in life, are more likely to be creative as well. When innovative thinking is sought, bold new ideas and initiatives seem to arrive out of nowhere. Just like the red cars, those fresh ideas were there all along.

I highly recommend the innovative and results oriented book Seeing Red Cars: Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future by Laura Goodrich, to anyone looking for commitment, both individually and on an organization wide basis, to focusing on positive events. Looking for what you really want will surprise and delight the seeker of good things in business and in life.

Read the negative pattern breaking book Seeing Red Cars: Driving Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization to a Positive Future by Laura Goodrich, and discover how to make positive change with both realistic and effective techniques for personal and organizational transformation. You will be seeing red cars everywhere in the office and on the road of life.

Seeing Red Cars: Taking actions toward what you want requires breaking out of comfort zones

Src_header

Make the commitment to take it S-L-O-W, but make the decision to DO it!

Starting to take actions to move toward what you want in life often requires moving outside of your comfort zones. This is hard. It feels awkward and can be unnerving. I always advise people to take it S-L-O-W.

Srcbookcover

In my book Seeing Red Cars I give the example of a client I was coaching who was shy and quiet and typically sat through meetings without saying a word. She wanted that to change. I advised her to start by contributing at least one useful idea in every meeting. She had never spoken up before! This was a stretch, but she agreed to give it a try. I told her people may react with surprise the first time she speaks up, but once she does it the first time she’ll realize it wasn’t so bad and it will give her confidence going into the next meeting. That’s exactly what happened!

I also share the story about the miraculous turnaround of a client who discovered her true passion and prevailed:

I was working with an advanced biomedical company on a 12-week program to help employees focus on the outcomes they were looking for. Carla was an assembly-line worker and was curious about the concepts, and, frankly, they were a little unnerving to her. She cautiously began thinking to herself about her true passions, strengths, and values.

When we were close to the end of the 12-week program, I noticed Carla wanted to speak to me after class. She hung back and waited to have a chance to talk. She finally approached me after everyone had left the room and told me her story. She found the Seeing Red Cars concept (focusing on what you want) intriguing, but it really scared her in the beginning. That was because she realized through the process that she really loves finance and numbers and she wanted to move into the accounting department. She gradually started talking about the idea with her colleagues and manager, and they encouraged her and gave her the confidence to focus on her true interests and values. She finally worked up the courage to apply for the accounting program at a local college.

I had the opportunity to follow up with Carla over the years. She completed her accounting education and moved into the accounting department. Eventually, she moved into a leadership role in accounting before she moved to another organization when she married—you see, she had also identified the type of person she wanted to spend her life with during the original 12-week course and ultimately met that person and moved to another city, where she continued her journey as an accountant.

The reason Carla stuck with her plan and kept pursuing her desires is that she took it one step at a time and slowly built on each small success. It worked for her and it can work for you, too. Start Seeing Red Cars!

Seeing Red Cars: Actions speak loudly—your children are watching!

Header

You’ll be grateful later when you’re clear now about your own wants

Your actions influence those around you, and especially your children. This fact became even more clear to me recently when I attended the funeral for my friend’s father. First, as I was walking through the parking lot, I saw a former coaching client I hadn’t seen in several years. It was a surprise to both of us when we saw each other. My friend’s father’s name was Glenn and my former client, John, was arriving to sing at his service.

My first reflections happened during the service itself. There were two people who spoke at Glenn’s funeral.

  • First was a work colleague and close friend of 30 years.  He spoke of Glenn’s dedicated service and love of work and friendships.
  • Second was Sarah, his granddaughter.  She stepped to the microphone with a quiet confidence and told  funny and moving stories of her grandfather.  She talked about his dedication to family and his love of fishing. Her voice cracked and she pulled us in very closely to her love and loss.

I got an intimate glimpse of a man and his family, although I had never met him.  It caused me to reflect on family and the power of legacy. As I heard the stories of this man, I could see the influence he had had on his daughter, and then his granddaughter—all honest, hardworking and dedicated folks.

At the end of the service I looked up and John, my client, was standing in front of me.  His music had been lovely and I felt so grateful for how he had blessed the occasion. We stepped outside into the sunlight and he began to tell me a story. “Ten years ago you worked with me, Laura, and you asked me, what do you want?  I answered, and you told me that my response was as clear as mud!” I cringed a little at the bluntness of my words, but I didn’t let it show. He continued, “I knew my life was all tangled up and I lacked clarity. Together we untangled my thoughts and my dreams, and I finally was able to articulate what I wanted, personally and professionally, with great clarity!  I found the work hard and at times I did not enjoy it. But now, as I look back on my life, I realize I have accomplished everything I set out to accomplish ten years ago, and more!”

At this point he began to slow down, and the reflection overwhelmed him.  Tears streamed down his face as he told me how he was very proud of his own accomplishments, but even more proud and grateful for of the impact that his personal clarity has had on his son.  John said, "I’m convinced that he would not be where he is today, which is a very good place, if I had not gotten clear about my own desires."

I always say, more important than the words you say to others are your actions!  Others are always watching. I’ve found that people can live with their own mistakes, but abhor the idea that their focus or lack of focus could cause their children to build a life that is either good or not so good. How you live your life affects everyone around you. This was a surprising learning I gained while writing the book Seeing Red Cars.

Doing anything that is counter to building strong and capable children is unthinkable to most parents and is the reason I’ve seen people like John and others work hard to make positive changes in their own lives.

Imagine yourself and your family ten years from now.  Imagine telling me a story that would cause you extraordinary pride.  Imagine being drawn to tears while telling me what you and your family have accomplished, and how many people have been blessed along the way.  This is the power of clarity.  This is the power of knowing what you want both personally and professionally.

Start Seeing Red Cars!   I can’t wait to hear your story!
