Seeing Red Cars: Taking actions toward what you want requires breaking out of comfort zones

Src_header

Make the commitment to take it S-L-O-W, but make the decision to DO it!

Starting to take actions to move toward what you want in life often requires moving outside of your comfort zones. This is hard. It feels awkward and can be unnerving. I always advise people to take it S-L-O-W.

Srcbookcover

In my book Seeing Red Cars I give the example of a client I was coaching who was shy and quiet and typically sat through meetings without saying a word. She wanted that to change. I advised her to start by contributing at least one useful idea in every meeting. She had never spoken up before! This was a stretch, but she agreed to give it a try. I told her people may react with surprise the first time she speaks up, but once she does it the first time she’ll realize it wasn’t so bad and it will give her confidence going into the next meeting. That’s exactly what happened!

I also share the story about the miraculous turnaround of a client who discovered her true passion and prevailed:

I was working with an advanced biomedical company on a 12-week program to help employees focus on the outcomes they were looking for. Carla was an assembly-line worker and was curious about the concepts, and, frankly, they were a little unnerving to her. She cautiously began thinking to herself about her true passions, strengths, and values.

When we were close to the end of the 12-week program, I noticed Carla wanted to speak to me after class. She hung back and waited to have a chance to talk. She finally approached me after everyone had left the room and told me her story. She found the Seeing Red Cars concept (focusing on what you want) intriguing, but it really scared her in the beginning. That was because she realized through the process that she really loves finance and numbers and she wanted to move into the accounting department. She gradually started talking about the idea with her colleagues and manager, and they encouraged her and gave her the confidence to focus on her true interests and values. She finally worked up the courage to apply for the accounting program at a local college.

I had the opportunity to follow up with Carla over the years. She completed her accounting education and moved into the accounting department. Eventually, she moved into a leadership role in accounting before she moved to another organization when she married—you see, she had also identified the type of person she wanted to spend her life with during the original 12-week course and ultimately met that person and moved to another city, where she continued her journey as an accountant.

The reason Carla stuck with her plan and kept pursuing her desires is that she took it one step at a time and slowly built on each small success. It worked for her and it can work for you, too. Start Seeing Red Cars!

If you want to drive yourself, your team and your organization to a positive future, I am excited to offer the process and toolkit that can get you there. Check out the resources at seeingredcarsbook.com.

Seeing Red Cars: Actions speak loudly—your children are watching!

Header

You’ll be grateful later when you’re clear now about your own wants

Your actions influence those around you, and especially your children. This fact became even more clear to me recently when I attended the funeral for my friend’s father. First, as I was walking through the parking lot, I saw a former coaching client I hadn’t seen in several years. It was a surprise to both of us when we saw each other. My friend’s father’s name was Glenn and my former client, John, was arriving to sing at his service.

My first reflections happened during the service itself. There were two people who spoke at Glenn’s funeral.

  • First was a work colleague and close friend of 30 years.  He spoke of Glenn’s dedicated service and love of work and friendships.
  • Second was Sarah, his granddaughter.  She stepped to the microphone with a quiet confidence and told  funny and moving stories of her grandfather.  She talked about his dedication to family and his love of fishing. Her voice cracked and she pulled us in very closely to her love and loss.

I got an intimate glimpse of a man and his family, although I had never met him.  It caused me to reflect on family and the power of legacy. As I heard the stories of this man, I could see the influence he had had on his daughter, and then his granddaughter—all honest, hardworking and dedicated folks.

At the end of the service I looked up and John, my client, was standing in front of me.  His music had been lovely and I felt so grateful for how he had blessed the occasion. We stepped outside into the sunlight and he began to tell me a story. “Ten years ago you worked with me, Laura, and you asked me, what do you want?  I answered, and you told me that my response was as clear as mud!” I cringed a little at the bluntness of my words, but I didn’t let it show. He continued, “I knew my life was all tangled up and I lacked clarity. Together we untangled my thoughts and my dreams, and I finally was able to articulate what I wanted, personally and professionally, with great clarity!  I found the work hard and at times I did not enjoy it. But now, as I look back on my life, I realize I have accomplished everything I set out to accomplish ten years ago, and more!”

At this point he began to slow down, and the reflection overwhelmed him.  Tears streamed down his face as he told me how he was very proud of his own accomplishments, but even more proud and grateful for of the impact that his personal clarity has had on his son.  John said, "I’m convinced that he would not be where he is today, which is a very good place, if I had not gotten clear about my own desires."

I always say, more important than the words you say to others are your actions!  Others are always watching. I’ve found that people can live with their own mistakes, but abhor the idea that their focus or lack of focus could cause their children to build a life that is either good or not so good. How you live your life affects everyone around you. This was a surprising learning I gained while writing the book Seeing Red Cars.

Doing anything that is counter to building strong and capable children is unthinkable to most parents and is the reason I’ve seen people like John and others work hard to make positive changes in their own lives.

Imagine yourself and your family ten years from now.  Imagine telling me a story that would cause you extraordinary pride.  Imagine being drawn to tears while telling me what you and your family have accomplished, and how many people have been blessed along the way.  This is the power of clarity.  This is the power of knowing what you want both personally and professionally.

Start Seeing Red Cars!   I can’t wait to hear your story!

Are you clear about your personal and professional wants?

How does personal clarity influence others?

Seeing Red Cars: Careful—a deal-breaking weakness can overshadow your strengths. Deal with it.

Src_header

Ask your supporters to help identify your weaknesses

Do you have a weakness that may or may not be apparent to you, but is blazingly obvious to those around you?  Examples:

  • Every time a female team member faces a new or unfamiliar situation, she reacts with facial expressions that cross between sheer terror and outright anger. Her coworkers are instantly put-off by her dramatic reaction. The organization is frustrated that her negative response, a reflex for which she is unaware, undermines their efforts to create a change-adaptive culture.
  • A soccer parent on the sidelines gets so emotionally involved in the action on the field that he explodes in uncontrollable rants. It embarrasses his wife, his son, and the rest of the players and parents. It doesn’t matter how many strengths he may have or what they are, because they are overshadowed by his weakness.

I talk a lot about strengths and emphasize their importance, but perhaps equally important is addressing weaknesses. While you may never be able to reverse a weakness, accomplishment of goals relies upon awareness of weaknesses so you can bring them to neutral. And, once you clearly identify areas where you are weak, you can bring in others to work with you who are strong in those areas.

So how do you bridge the gap between a deal-breaking weakness and neutral? Start with awareness. Identify your weaknesses yourself, if you think you know them. Even if you feel like you do know your weakness, ask your supporters for their “take.” When does it come up? What situations bring it to light? What exactly does it look like?

Once you know, you can take action. Pre-plan what your positive response will be and then be alert to situations that trigger negative reactions.  Catch yourself before your instincts take over.  Respond with positive intentions instead.

Contend with your weaknesses and bring them to neutral so when that perfect job, project or opportunity comes knocking, your strengths are able to shine brightly independent of the shadow of a deal-breaking weakness.

If you want to drive yourself, your team and your organization to a positive future, I am excited to offer the process and toolkit that can get you there. Check out the resources at seeingredcarsbook.com.
